The drawings explored scale and ideas about how a line can be made. I mainly worked in groups of three, starting with a less-developed drawing, small in scale in relation to the paper. I would begin the next version on a new sheet in the same location and with the same implement. Essentially, the second and third drawings replicated the first but passed beyond it. The second drawing was a middle marker and the third would only stop on arriving near the edges of the paper. As in my later drawings, the system that was set up and the mark that was made became the framework within which the drawing developed–with the variation in line created by the ability of the drawing tool to divest itself of ink. The time expended gave the work its scale. The residue left on the paper is also affected by how the drawing tool is held. The trace left by the tool is a timeline of activity. The rhythm of strokes is seen in the uneven blobs of ink and thinning lines which mark pauses for refill and repeated beginnings. In a review in Time Out, Martin Coomer writes: “Carmel Buckley has drawn a series of single and concentric circles, each composed of small dots or lines in luminous orange ink which, traditionally, is used in Japan as a correction ink. The project is fraught with error; success hinges on the conflict between the perfection of the intended circle and her inability to achieve it. An engaging installation.” At this time my work in sculpture was concerned with imagined structures developed from everyday found objects such as a brush or a tea strainer. Such found objects launched a meditation on and an imaginary extension of these structures. These sculptures used wire to suggest both volume and form while simultaneously existing as a line in space. Through the use of fine wire I have attempted to work in a way that suggests the work is coming into being or about to disappear. A catalogue with an essay by Paola Morsiani, then an Assistant Curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX (currently Director of the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, SUNY), accompanied the exhibition. In this piece I was concerned with imagined structures developed from everyday found objects. Three metal vents on an adjacent building were my starting point. I took measurements and made replicas in wood. Using the lost wax process, I cast the replicas of the vents in aluminum. I then connected the vents with long stretches of aluminum wire. These sculptures used wire to suggest both volume and form while simultaneously existing as a line in space. They could be read as darning or stitching the building, or as a depiction of an imaginary expulsion of air or gas from the building. The wire forms captured and delineated a space that extended from the found element and could be thought of as drawings in space, as this space or air within the work was an important part of the piece. Among our collaborative works, Mark Harris and I included Colonial Stock Book, which juxtaposed actual West Indian stamps from around the time of the Second World War with facsimile enlargements of details from those same originals. These enlargements showed details of scenes of island labor, predominantly rural, normally barely discernable in the background of the originals. The details also removed the monarch’s head from each stamp. Their captions were enlarged to be more easily legible since they tended to designate a pastoral and picturesque aspect to what in reality was strenuous agricultural labor endured under poor working conditions. The book containing the stamps held a CD player and speakers. The viewer could listen to 1930s’ Trinidadian calypsos whose lyrics narrated in detail the effects of unemployment and the labor unrest resulting from the low pay and appalling conditions of agricultural work. Both the stamps and calypsos followed similar trade routes out of the West Indian islands to the communities of islanders who had emigrated to North America and Britain. The two cultural commodities presented contradictory images of life on the islands, yet taken together they provide a compelling summary of colonial indifference fuelling a humorous and insightful local commentary, which at times was censored in the interests of preserving this appearance of stability and contentment. We also showed “Splash,” a piece that came about when I was invited to participate in the Joint Technologies Application Programme in England to make a series of rapid prototypes. I wanted to capture a moment of action (as in the photograph of milk by Harold Edgerton), in this case, the action of making a drawing, or painting and so shifting from something 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional. I asked Mark Harris for a drawing; at the time he was making drawings of splashes, which I then interpreted using a 3-D computer modeling program. Once the piece was made, we decided that it would be appropriate to somehow suspend the form in space. To do this we made a plexiglass box where the piece is housed in suspension. Installation view “Nature’s Stain,” Aisle Gallery, Cincinnati, OH. 2010 Two-person show In this exhibition I showed new drawings from a series whose imagery derived from early-twentieth-century illustrations of fairy tales with their depictions of human transformation and enchanted objects. These works reinterpret the imagery and treatment of Harry Clarke’s illustrations for two books, The Fairy Tales of Perrault (1922) and Edgar Allen Poe’s Tales of Mystery and Imagination (1919). In the drawings I explored connections between my long-standing interests in drawing processes, patterning, and accumulation of marks and the frequently elaborate embellishments of these art deco illustrations. The drawings encompassed a number of series made of black-and-white images along with colorful landscapes and figures. In these works the line is drawn, in places closely referencing a stitched line or embroidery. The color drawings have an aspect of coming in to being with empty spaces on the paper counterbalancing the drawn line. Also exhibited were a series of vortex drawings that explore the relationship of virtually the same image repeated in slightly different variations on the page. A catalogue with essays by Matt Morris and Joel Fisher accompanied the exhibition. Untitled - cut paper print, found object (bucket), 12 x 19 x 24 inches, 2010 “Carmel Buckley New Work,” semantics gallery, Cincinnati, OH, 2010 Solo exhibition Within this exhibition I worked between practices of sculpture and drawing, with the two colliding into one another in subtle and unexpected ways. Sometimes a drawing will become a sculpture, or inform a sculpture, and likewise a sculptural object may be used to create a silhouette drawing. Among the works exhibited were a found object (bucket) overflowing with a paper cutout (that had previously been a monoprint); a found object (potato ricer) centered on a piece of patterned cloth and a felt blanket with cutout circles that lay scattered around the remains of the blanket. The patterned cloth piece and the cut blanket sculptural piece connected to the drawings of small circles exhibited in the same space. The tiny circles of those drawings simultaneously become a scenic landscape that might be seen in the background of a nineteenth-century illustration. The circles were drawn repetitively over a number of weeks and although I attempted to treat them as a uniform screen, they captured the rhythm of making the work, the pen running out of ink and having to be replaced, and the accidental lack of focus and pressure of the pen on the paper. Installation view #1, 2011 “Carmel Buckley Sculpture and Prints,” Clay Street Press, Cincinnati, OH, 2011 Solo exhibition This show became a mini-retrospective in the fall of 2011. I was initially invited to do a series of prints at Clay Street Press, a print workshop and gallery in Cincinnati. I was later asked to do an exhibition that would highlight work from the past seventeen years. The series of six prints made in the summer of 2011 extended my interest in book illustration from the nineteenth and the early-twentieth centuries. In this series I looked at the work of J. J. Grandville from the Les Fleurs Animées. These works used detailed line and pattern to invent a contemporary drawing vocabulary in reference to the intensely rendered imagery of Grandville’s originals. The prints are a response to looking at the illustrated works and prompt my own further investigations. Referencing these earlier drawings allowed me to explore aspects of perception and legibility, the physical qualities of drawn marks, repetition, and the materiality of images on paper. In this exhibition I also had the opportunity to show my “diptych” drawings, which investigate making a mark by drawing and sewing the same image. In this series I often began with an object that I would trace or draw through, and I then replicate it again, sewing the image onto a second sheet of paper. I would have to devise a thread stitch that would in some way echo or replicate the mark that the pen would make when drawing the form. From a distance the drawings are very similar, like fraternal twins, but on closer inspection the work does very different things. The sewn paper and three-dimensionality of the drawn/sewn area defy initial expectations, and one becomes very aware of the making of the piece and of the materiality and the puckered fragility of the paper with the sewn section embedded in its fibers. The sculpture in the exhibition brought together different strands of my work from the Tools for the Imagination series of the early/mid-1990s to recent soft sculpture. This work hadn’t been showed together previously, and the exhibition served as an opportunity to connect and evaluate the relationships in my work between drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Untitled #3, Japanese paper, ink pens, 17 x 20.5 inches, 2012 “Double Takes,” Center for Recent Drawing, London, England, 2012 Solo exhibition The Center for Recent Drawing (C4RD) calls itself London’s museum space for drawing. Since 2004 C4RD has provided a public exhibition space that is independent and non-commercial. It is located in central London and occupies a whole building dedicated to drawing. In conjunction with the space, the Center has an ongoing series of publications and activities related to the exhibitions and to the support of drawing, along with a residency program. Joel Fisher, an artist, writer, and curator, was invited to curate an exhibition and selected my work for a solo show. He writes, “The work that Carmel Buckley’s drawings represent offers to the world an example of a kind of ‘reliving’ even a re-interpretation of an experience. If interpreted broadly this might have a contribution to make well beyond the boundaries of art. It appears to have similarities to translation, but in reality it is profoundly different. The switch from a first event, to a second manifestation is not just a matter of degree. Something very human happens in the process. This is not art as reportage but as experience.” In the exhibition I showed fourteen drawings that engaged with work of Harry Clarke, an Irish illustrator of the early-twentieth century, and J. J. Grandville, a nineteenth-century French illustrator and caricaturist. In the most recent series of drawings I have been tracing around leaves from the garden woodland that surrounds the property where I presently live in. The leaves’ silhouettes spark the development of the drawing and become windows into the imagined world of an interior landscape. The drawings are all made with watercolor pens but use lines constructed from individual marks, like a variety of stitches, questioning the materiality of the work and whether it is made by sewing or drawing. There is a sense of conscious incompleteness in the work, which Andrew Hewish, the founding director of C4RD, comments on: “I always wonder if that is not something that we favour in drawing, particularly fine art drawing over perhaps illustration, particularly cover illustrations from the turn of the century where they are close to painting in a way in that they present a complete world. The most concrete form of painting will present a complete and whole world for us whereas a drawing will often allow us space for some form of completion. Cy Twombly is a great example of someone who treads both grounds to make a painting that is somehow not quite complete.” During the exhibition, C4RD hosted a panel discussion in the gallery with Andrew Hewish, the founding director of the gallery and lecturer at the Sir. John Cass School of Art; Alison Green, critic, writer, and senior lecturer at Central St. Martins on the BA Criticism, Communication and Curation course; Joel Fisher, artist and writer; and Josh Greer, curatorial assistant at C4RD. These drawing use detailed line and pattern to invent a contemporary drawing vocabulary in reference to the intensely rendered imagery of their originals. showed a series of older prints that used inked-up found materials and chine collé. I also exhibited a new series of drawings which were made with my child’s art supplies. I used what were called “spider pens,” which left a sticky trail of ink. By drawing with a series of points on the paper I was left with a thin line of ink between the marks I made. This group of works was similar to my earlier orange ink correction drawings in the use of repetition and accidental mark making. The system that is set up—and the mark that is made—becomes the framework within which the drawing develops. The variation in line is created by the ability of the drawing tool to divest itself of ink, the starts and stops while making the piece, and the direction of the line. The time expended gives the work its scale.
